Werner Enterprises driver saves life of another driver

During the Company's quarterly recognition ceremony, Werner Enterprises driver, James Collier of Davenport, Iowa, was recognized for his heroic actions in saving another driver's life.

Collier witnessed a fellow driver collapse from a heart attack in the parking lot of a truck stop in Walcott, Iowa. He sprang into action, rushed to the fallen driver and administered CPR until paramedics arrived. Without Collier's quick response and commendable actions, it's possible the driver would not have survived. The driver, his family and the owner of the truck company have extended their gratitude to Collier for his life-saving actions.

Collier was presented with Werner Enterprises' Humanitarian Award, which is given to honored recipients who have distinguished themselves through understanding, empathy and devotion to others in a time of need. The Humanitarian Award is the highest honor bestowed upon an associate who had made an impact on humanity and has gone above and beyond the call of duty.

"Werner Enterprises is incredibly proud of James and the remarkable actions he took that morning," said Steve Phillips, senior vice president of operations. "We are honored to recognize him and it is a privilege to have James as a member of our team. It is associates like him who truly make our company a best-in-class organization."

Even after his admirable actions, Collier remains humble.

"I did nothing out of the ordinary," he said. "I was just in the right place at the right time."

Werner Enterprises Driver Named TCA Highway Angel

Jason Tolliver, a professional truck driver for Werner Enterprises, has been named a Truckload Carriers Association (TCA) Highway Angel for helping a fellow truck driver survive a medical emergency.

In the early morning hours of May 29, 2010, Tolliver was getting ready to leave a customer's facility when he saw a man lying on the ground and security guards hovering over him. Apparently, William Hoage, a truck driver for another company, had been walking toward the rear of his trailer to secure his load when he stopped abruptly and collapsed to the ground.

Tolliver came over to help, found the driver to be unresponsive and immediately began administering CPR. He asked one of the security guards to call 911 and continued to provide CPR until medical personnel arrived and took over.

"I took an EMT course after high school, before I got into trucking," said Tolliver. "It definitely came in handy that day."

Hoage was transported to the hospital and was treated for a heart attack. He remained in the intensive care unit for several days and was released after about a week. His family later communicated to Werner Enterprises that they are extremely grateful for Tolliver's assistance.

For helping Hoage survive his heart attack, Tolliver has received a Highway Angel lapel pin, certificate and patch.

Since its inception in Aug. 1997, the Highway Angels Program has recognized hundreds of drivers for the unusual kindness, courtesy and courage they have shown others while on the job. TCA has received letters and e-mails from people across North America nominating truck drivers for the program.
